First module of a two-day psychosocial seminar for teachers in the Babil Region 11.12.2008 From 31 October to 1 November 2008, the Foundation “TOGETHER« organised, in cooperation with the Local Network for the Psychosocial Assistance to Children, the 1st module of a two-day psychosocial seminar at the Babil Faculty of Medicine. The module was attended by 60 teachers from 34 schools in the Babil Region. Local authorities in the field of education participated actively in the selection of teachers. It is of particular importance that teachers from the northern part of the Babil Region were included, which is an extremely unstable area with frequent riots, while the population is mostly of Sunnite origin. It was on these grounds that 60% of participants in the seminar were from the northern Babil and the other participants were teachers from remote and rural areas of Babil, mainly of Shiite origin. Such structure of participants ensured to meet the needs of teachers who most lack the knowledge and skills in the field of psychosocial assistance to traumatized children from the high-risk areas. The involvement of Sunnite and Shiite citizens contributed to the promotion and creation of peaceful relations among both communities and consequently also to the social security and stability in general. The seminar was conducted by ten Iraqi experts in the field of mental health who had been trained and worked within the programme in the previous years. The seminar was attended also by the Director of the Babil Directorate of Education.
The Foundation “TOGETHER” signed the Framework Partnership Agreement with the Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) 05.12.2008 At the end of November, the Foundation “TOGETHER” signed a framework partnership agreement (FPA) with the Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) and thus ensured additional support in the implementation of its programmes and new opportunities to provide humanitarian aid in post-conflict areas on the international level.
Second module of a two-day psychosocial seminar for teachers in the Babil Region 05.12.2008 The second module of a two-day psychosocial seminar for teachers was organised from 28-29 November 2008 at the Babil Faculty of Medicine. The seminar was attended by 60 teachers from 34 schools in the Babil region and it was conducted by ten local Iraqi experts in the field of mental health who had been trained and worked within the programme in the previous years. At the end of the seminar, the teachers were advised to use the acquainted knowledge in practice. It is particularly necessary to identify the children with behavioural difficulties, such as concentration disorders and hyperactivity. The teachers were also invited to seek help from the local experts in solving the actual problems, and some cases could be presented within seminars for teachers to be organised during the following years. The seminar was attended also by the Director of the Babil Directorate of Education.
Training for mental helath workers in BiH 20.11.2008 During the period 14 to 16 November 2008, two one-day training events were organised at Brčko (BiH) for mental health workers operating within the Counselling Centre. The training was implemented within the framework of the project on “Psychosocial Counselling Centres for Children and Parents in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Kosovo”.
The training was conducted by the Slovene expert, Mr. Herman Vernik. The Slovene expert, the representative of the Counselling Centre at Gračanica (who was present in all workshops) and the foundation “TOGETHER” decided to divide the training into two substantively separated one-day workshops, as indicated in the project proposal. Both workshops were intended for local mental health experts already active and those starting to work at the Counselling Centre at Gračanica:
• the first workshop was intended for local experts working within the Counselling Centre at Gračanica for several years; therefore, the workshop was mostly of a supervisory character;
• the second workshop was intended for local experts who were starting to work for the Counselling Centre at Gračanica and hence the workshop included in particular the basic principles of such type of work.
Both workshops were attended by 11 participants.
