LJUBLJANA

Ljubljana is at the heart of Slovenia, geographically, culturally, economically and politically. Its history stretches back to pre-Roman times. Since then, it has gradually evolved into a charming city of culture and architecture with a unique spirit which is both traditional and modern, distinctly Slovenian as well as readily adopting international influences. The streets and squares are lively and the architecture presents an exquisite view at every turn. The major influences are Baroque and Art Nouveau, and the combination makes Ljubljana a city like no other. The most important contribution to the city was made by Jože Plečnik, Ljubljana’s favourite son, who was responsible for such masterpieces as Tromostovje (the Three Bridges), the open market and the National University Library. Ljubljana is overwhelmingly a city where people like to enjoy being outside, due to its unique ambience. A stroll through the Old Town or along the Ljubljanica River brings to mind Paris or Prague without the crowds, with numerous street cafés, restaurants and bars in a traffic-free environment. In Ljubljana, culture is all-important, with a frenetic programme of events and performances. Above all, Ljubljana is a green city and a city of bridges with a majestic castle on a hill dominating the skyline. Weekends are for a visit to the open market on a Saturday with its huge selection of high-quality produce, or a leisurely browse around the riverside antique market on a Sunday. This relaxed, lively and fun-loving city knows that work is work and play is play and combines service, efficiency and hospitality with a relaxed ambience.
