The guided walking tour will take you through the centre of the Slovenian capital, past its many tourist attractions. You will have a magnificent view from Ljubljana Castle tower over the city and its surroundings. In addition, you will be able to "stroll" through the streets of Ljubljana during different historical periods in the Virtual Museum.

Postojna Caves (half day)

Postojna Caves, an impressive, two million years old underground world of fabulous stalactites, stalagmites, pillars and translucent curtains, constitute one of the most beautiful natural curiosities in Europe. A ride by electric train will be followed by a guided walk through a series of illuminated halls and underground channels, which have a total length of 27 km. The underground waters are the home of the world's unique, rare, and endangered species of amphibian, Proteus anguinus, or "human fish" as it is popularly called here. After the visit to the caves, there will be a stop at a local Karst farm to taste the typical Karst specialities - the air-dried ham "prsut" and the ruby-red wine Teran - EU trademark wine.

Bled (half day)

Bled is the most popular tourist resort in Slovenia. It is often referred to as the "pearl of the Alpine region" owing to its emerald-green lake, church on the island in the middle of the lake, and medieval castle from the 11th century, perched on a cliff over the lake. The visit to Bled Castle will be followed by some free time, and then a further short drive to Radovljica - a town that has preserved its medieval form - where we will stop for lunch in a typical local inn.

Portoroz and Piran (full day)

It will take one hour and a half by bus to reach one of the most beautiful cities on the Slovenian coast - Piran, birthplace of Tartini, where we will stroll through the narrow streets with fascinating Venetian architecture and along the quay packed with boats. From this lovely town that has retained its medieval form, you can see the entire Slovenian coast as well as the shores of Italy and Croatia. Guided sightseeing of Piran will be followed by lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, there will be a 1.5 hour boat ride along the Slovenian coast. We will disembark in Portoroz or "port of roses", the most popular Slovenian sea resort. You will have some free time here to enjoy the beaches with slides, boats and surfboards, the shops and cafes. You are invited to bathe in the Adriatic Sea.

The Karst Region (full day)

A trip to the magnificent Karst region in the south-western part of Slovenia. During lunch, you will have an opportunity to taste the air-dried ham "prsut" and famous red wine, Teran. The trip will continue with a visit to Stanjel village, with typical Karst architecture, and to Lipica, the cradle of Lippizzaner horses where you can visit the stables and see a performance of the Spanish riding school.

Soca Rafting (full day)

A coach drive to the Soca valley, one of the most colourful areas in Slovenia, immortalised by Hemingway in A Farewell to Arms. The River Soca, that runs along the country's western border is one of the most beautiful "jewels" of Europe. The source of the river is located in the middle of Triglav National Park, which covers a large part of the Julian Alps. The region offers a variety of sports possibilities, among which one of the most enjoyable is a trip by raft under the supervision of professionally skilled and licensed instructor-guides. Wetsuits will be provided!

The High Adventure Rope Course (half day)
Saturday, September 6 and Thursday, September 11, 2003

The High Adventure Rope Course focuses on dynamic issues of trust, support, coaching and encouragement, as each person dons a harness and helmet, and is attached to safety ropes for a set of experiences 8 to 12 meters off the ground. Partnering, team trust, and doing more than you think you can with the support of the team are the themes emphasized. Each challenge requires different levels of physical performance, so individuals may choose which are most appropriate for them. There is plenty of variety for everyone, from the climbing wall and pamper pole, to giant swing. This is major fun!

A Balloon Ride (half day)
Saturday, September 6 and Thursday, September 11, 2003

Participants will have a chance to take a ride by balloon and have a bird's eye view of the Ljubljana surroundings. The ride will start and end on Ljubljana Barje, the area from which the legend of the Ljubljana dragon - the symbol of the city - originated. The balloon journey takes approximately 1-1.5 hour. Participants should be dressed warmly and appropriately for sport activities.

PRE- AND POST-CONGRESS TOURS

Venice (1 day)
September 6 and September 12, 2003

A transfer to the Slovenian coast will be organised. There you will board the catamaran "Prince of Venice" (fast ferry), arriving in Venice after a 2.5-hour journey, where an English-speaking guide will accompany you through the streets of the "floating city", situated in a lagoon with 118 islets. You will visit San Marco's Square, the mighty Doge's Palace, the Rialto Bridge and other interesting sights of the city. The rest of the afternoon is free for individual exploration. Embarkation in the late afternoon and return to the Slovenian coast, where a coach will take you back to Ljubljana.

The Alpine Region (3 days)
September 3 - 5 and September 12 - 14, 2003

Day 1: Ljubljana - Bohinj Lake- Savica waterfall - Radovljica - Kranjska gora
Day 2: Kranjska Gora - Zelenci - Planica - Tarvisio (IT) - Predel - Trenta valley - Bovec
Day 3: Bovec - Kobarid - Tolmin - Most na Soci - Ljubljana

Day 1: Ride to Bohinj - the largest glacial lake in Slovenia, situated in the Alpine region with the highest Slovenian peak (Mt. Triglav) rising above it. Stop to visit the small medieval church full of exquisite frescoes. Continue on foot to the interesting Savica waterfall, hidden on the edge of the mountains about 15 minutes' walk from the lake. After lunch in a typical Slovenian inn in the medieval town of Radovljica, coach ride to Kranjska Gora, the oldest winter tourist resort in Slovenia, with famous ski slopes, organiser of world ski cup competitions and host to the world ski elite. Overnight stay.

Day 2: From Kranjska Gora a coach ride to the spring of the Sava river (Zelenci) and nearby Planica with the world famous ski jumps. Across the Italian border and stop-over in Tarvisio for shopping. Continue over the Predel mountain pass to the beautiful Trenta valley. Trenta is the heart of Triglav National Park, which covers a large area of the Julian Alps. A visit to Trenta Museum will be followed by a coach ride to Bovec, another famous ski resort. After lunch, the rest of the afternoon free for individual enterprise. Overnight stay.

Day 3: Coach ride through the Soca valley, one of the most magnificent areas in Slovenia, where the crystal purity of the mountain waters are truly remarkable. Running through Triglav National Park, the breathtaking Soca river, owing to its unique emerald colour, is considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. It runs through deep and narrow hollows in the rock base, creating pools, rapids and channels. Situated at a meeting point of nations, the Soca valley has been the scene of some important historic events. The museum of the 1st World War in Kobarid has won the European Museum of the Year award for its presentation. After lunch in the vicinity of Tolmin, a visit to a traditional cheese-making farm. Late afternoon return to Ljubljana.

Slovenian Coastal Region (5 days)

Day 3: Portoroz - Secovlje saltflats - Tonina House - Portoroz

Day 1: Departure from Ljubljana and stop in Postojna to visit the two-million-year-old system of subterranean caverns, with beautiful and colourful stalactites and stalagmites. Drive further to picturesque Predjama Castle, hanging dramatically in the middle of a 123m cliff. Lunch on a typical Slovenian tourist farm. Continue to Hrastovlje church with the famous "Dance of Death" frescoes. Drive on to the coast and stop at Portoroz, Slovenia's largest seaside resort. Overnight.

Day 2: Departure from Portoroz to Piran, with a stroll through the narrow streets with fascinating Venetian architecture and along the quay packed with boats. You can see the entire Slovenian coast from this lovely town, which has retained its medieval form, as well as the shores of Italy and Croatia. Free afternoon for individual enterprise. Return to Portoroz and overnight.

Day 3: Departure from Portoroz and visit to Secovlje saltflats, a regional park with an open-air salt-making museum presenting the tradition of salt production. The interesting landscape is of major ornithological importance. A visit to Tonina House follows, where there is an exhibition of olive oil production. Return to Portoroz and the rest of the day free for individual enterprise. Overnight.

Day 4: Departure from Portoroz to Lipica stud farm, the cradle of the famous "Lipizzaner" white horses. Continue to the heart of the Karst region and visit to Stanjel village, a gem of Karst stone architecture dating far back to medieval times. Stop at a typical Karst farm, with an opportunity to taste the local culinary specialities of air-dried ham, "prsut", and famous Teran red wine. Return to Portoroz and overnight.

Day 5: After breakfast, check-out and return to Ljubljana.

Price: 420 EUR per person (minimum 30 persons)
The price includes: bus transfer, English-speaking guide, 3* hotel accommodation in double rooms on HB basis, entrances to Postojna Caves, Predjama Castle, Hrastovlje Church, Secovlje saltflats, Tonina House, Lipica stud farm, visit to Stanjel village, sightseeing of Piran, lunch (Day 1), tasting of dried ham "prsut" and famous red wine Teran at the Karst farm (Day 4).

- The tours are subject to change. KOMPAS reserves the right to cancel the optional excursions should the minimum number of participants not be reached.


Golf Tournament

Golf Tournament of Pathologists will be organised after the Congress at the Golf and Country Club Bled, 50 km from Ljubljana. Those who are interested in participating, please indicate this on the Registration Form or contact Organising Committee by e-mail: ECP2003@mf.uni-lj.si

The Bled golf course has much to offer both beginners and amateurs, as well as the most demanding professional players accustomed to tournaments around the world. It consists of two courses: The King's Course and the Lake Course, spread over almost a hundred hectares of land. They are distinguished by a luxurious sense of space and the generous arrangement of their playing areas. The exceptional natural surroundings make each hole a unique experience.

Booking is possible either via the On-line Hotel Accommodation & Tourist Programme Form or by completing and returning the printed Hotel Accommodation & Tourist Programme Form to the address of KOMPAS d.d.Travel Agency.

Book early to secure your participation in the tourist programme. Deadline for booking excursions is August 1, 2003. After the deadline dates, booking is possible only in case of free places. A limited number of tickets for each tour may be available at the Registration Desk during the Congress.

The deadline for total payment of the tourist programme is August 1, 2003. The payment can be settled either by credit card or by bank transfer (see Kompas account data in the "Payment of Hotel Accommodation" paragraph). Written confirmation will be sent to you after receipt of your credit card details or your bank transfer payment.


CANCELLATION OF TOURIST PROGRAMME

All cancellations must be sent in writing to Kompas d.d. For cancellations received before August 1, 2003, only an administrative fee to the amount of 10 EUR will be charged to your credit card or the total payment made by bank transfer minus 10 EUR will be refunded. After this date, no refunds will be made.
