Press release #2
On 3rd and 4th of March one of the biggest European competitions in freediving, called Maribor Apnea Days or MAD CUP 2006 will be organized. The competition will be held in swimming pool Pristan, Maribor with status of an open national competition and will count for the 1st round of Slovenian championship. The competition will be held in three pool disciplines recognized by AIDA:
- Dynamics with fins (DYN)
In DYN the competitor has to swim, under water with only one breath, the furthest distance. Fins can be used as the only instrument for moving under water. Most competitors use the so called “mono fin”. This a large fin the competitor puts on both of his feet. Current world record stands at 212 meters and the Slovenian record at 150 meters. - Dynamics without fins (DNF)
DNF is the same as DYN with the difference that no propelling devices are allowed. At DNF great importance caries right weighting and balance. The world record stands at 175 meters, Slovenian at 125 meters. - Static apnea (STA)
STA is a discipline where time spent under water with one breath is measured. It is performed not moving, for minimize the oxygen use. This is one of the psychically most demanding disciplines. Heart rate of the competitor can fall below 30 bpm while holding his breath. World record hold lasted 8 minutes and 58 seconds and the Slovenian record 6 minutes and 18 seconds.
Freediving also called apnea is a young sport that demands full physical and psychical readiness. On such competitions competitors always push the limits of the human body and sometimes push to far, resulting in loss of motion control and blackouts. Such performances can not be recognized so the competitor has to do a “surface protocol” to show his well being. For the surface protocol the competitor has to take of all equipment on his face (mask, goggles, nose clip), signal “OK” with his hand and say out loud “I am OK”, all this within 20 seconds upon surfacing. If he is not able to do this his performance is not recognized.
MAD CUP 2006 will be attending about 60 athletes from 9 countries and will be one of the biggest competitions in Europe this kind. Attending will also be the whole Slovenian national team with all Slovenian champions and record holders.
Special guest attending the competition will be Tom Sietas who is the World Champion, multiple World record holder and Guinness record holder. Tom currently holds all the world records mentioned above and is this days training for new world record attempts. On 7th of January this year he set a Guinness World record in static apnea with oxygen with 14 minutes and 15 seconds.
Best Slovenian freediver Mitja Štampfer will also be attending. On last years World Championships he made the 4. longest distance on the competition in his discipline. Mitja currently holds both Slovenian dynamic records and is also the national champion in dynamic disciplines.
We are expecting new national and Word records to be set on the competition. All records will be officially recognized by AIDA who’s president Bill Stromberg will be the main judge of the MAD CUP 2006 competition.
